I Am The Space Where I Am with John Arnone

March 27 - May 19

Hawn Gallery, Hamon Arts Library

Artist Satement

Welcome to I AM THE SPACE WHERE I AM with John Arnone, a retrospective of my theater design work which began roughly in 1973 with the Lion Theater Company in New York City and ended in 2019 with the tragic death of Katherine Owens.

I AM THE SPACE WHERE I AM (Je suis l’espace ou je suis) is taken from the pen of Noel Arnaud accompanying the collages of abstract surrealist Max Bucaille. It is also the title shared with my podcast I AM THE SPACE WHERE I AM with John Arnone.

It defines for me the theatrical experience in its most refined and exquisite practice. The playwright, actors, director, and designers construct a space, with carefully honed insight and inspired instinct, and create for the paying audience a journey (in the paraphrased words of Donald Cowan) accomplished in the imagination causing a metamorphosis of the audience making them something different from what they were before.

Translated: the creative team defines and creates the space which ultimately defines and creates the creative team.

Actors inhabit a space that in-habits the actors.

Directors define the movement of the space in time which in time moves the director’s sense of what the playwright intends to convey to the audience.

Designers infuse the space with sound, light, and structure which gives expression and birth to their imagination.

And thus,

I AM THE SPACE WHERE I AM.
